After-School Clubs Are Back

Friends of Mt. Washington School is pleased to announce three after-school clubs thanks to your generous support. 

Homework Club returns to Mt. Washington!

Beginning on Monday 9/12/16, the Homework Club runs year-round and will meet Mondays through Thursdays after school in the library. Open to 1st-6th grade only. FREE and on-going - please bring signed agreement form on student's first day.

Chess Club returns with a new partner!

Beginning on Friday, 9/9/16 a new chess club, in partnership with coaches from American Chess Academy, will meet for 10 weeks in the Lunch Pavilion every Friday after school. Please visit achessacademy.org for details about our club partner. All grades and skill levels welcome. $60

New to Mt. Washington: MWE Robotics Club!

For 5th and 6th grade students only, we are introducing an exciting new robotics club - sixteen students will build and program robotsusing Legos and EV3 software. The team will meet on Mondays from 4-5pm in Room 11 (Mrs. Langsdorff's classroom). If more than sixteen students apply, selection will be via lottery and waiting list will be kept for any openings.

 

Application forms will be sent home in students' backpacks and will also be made available at www.fomws.org. Applications are due back in the office by September 6th. Please email president@fowms.org with any questions.

Gardening Committee's new partnership with Enrich LA

We have a variety of garden spaces on campus, the two main spaces are the lower garden (main yard) and upper garden (beside and behind kindergarten classes.) In previous years, each classroom had a designated garden bed that was maintained and nurtured by the students, the parent garden volunteers and the teachers. This school-year (2016-2017) the classes will work together to grow one shared garden. New this year, we have partnered with EnrichLA. Their Garden Ranger, Ryley Schlachter, supported by teachers and parent volunteers, will provide classroom instruction and garden club on Fridays assuring every student has the chance to learn in the garden.

EACH CLASSROOM WILL HAVE SIX WEEKS OF GARDEN INSTRUCTION BY ENRICHLA.

These classes are a great time to volunteer in the classroom. EnrichLA will also run a weekly garden club during lunch on Fridays and parent volunteers can also assist during this time. Enrich LA will utilize the lower garden in the main yard. CLICK HERE FOR ALL CLASSROOM'S DATES

EACH CLASS STILL NEEDS A PARENT GARDEN REPRESENTATIVE.

The garden reps form the garden committee along with other interested school staff or community members. The garden committee supports the garden in many ways including maintenance, classroom support, fundraising, events, etc. The garden rep acts as the liaison between the garden committee and their classroom. The garden committee has three general meetings a year, brings gardening activities to the classroom and creates volunteer teams to address the needs of the school garden. First meeting is Friday, September 16th at 8:15 AM in the lower garden.

June General Membership Meeting

All FOMWS members may join us at the General Membership Meeting at the MPR of our school at 6:30pm, June 9th. We'll go over the FOMWS Auction results and fundings for next school-year as well as introduce new board members.

There are 3 STEPS TO REGISTRATION!

A few things to note:

  • For pre-school to elementary school age children only. 
  • Drop-off begins at 5:30PM and you must have your child picked up by 10:45PM.
  • Pizza and drinks will be provided by FOMWS.
  • Activities will include crafts, fun games, and a movie (Rise of the Guardians).
  • Sleeping bags, pillows, and stuffed friends are welcomed!

If you haven’t already purchased your spot, please do so here. The cost is $20 per child and proceeds go directly to FOMWS.

Most importantly, please download and fill out the consent form here and bring it with you when you drop your child(ren) off. Your child will not be allowed to participate without this form. Also, for the safety of your child(ren), please be aware that in order for your child to be picked up, the pick up person must be listed on the form and show photo id. No exceptions.

Memorial for Pat Griffith in Community Center (MPR)

Patricia Eileen Griffith passed away in the early morning hours of 18 April 2016. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held as follows:

  • Date: Sunday, May 1, 2016
  • Time: 5:30 p.m. – Potluck
  • 6:30 p.m. – Remembering Pat

Potluck suggestions – please bring 8-12 servings of something you love, ideally according to these last-name categories (if the thing you love doesn’t fit the category, bring it anyway):

Debbie McAfee and Debbie Vodhanel are creating a commemorative cookbook for Pat’s daughter Geneva. If you have a favorite recipe you would like to contribute, please e-mail it to demcafee@dslextreme.com or drop it off at the memorial.
