Friends of Mt. Washington School is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds and obtain donations to support educational, student enrichment, and capital improvement programs for Mt. Washington Elementary in Los Angeles.

Formed in 1993 by parents of children at the school, the FOMWS has helped raise money over the years for many essential school upgrades, including computers and broadband Internet access, as well as academic and enrichment activities, such as karate and field trips.

On a much larger scale, members of FOMWS conceived, spearheaded and helped raise more than $4 million toward building a much-needed multipurpose room and library on the campus, known as the Jack and Denny Smith Library and Community Center. This center, named in honor of the venerated Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith and his wife, Denny, is more than the sum of its wonderful parts (a library, faculty lounge, kitchen, and a stage/multipurpose room where students can perform and eat lunch when it rains). It reflects the state and school district’s desire to have schools be the center of the community, a place where both children and adults can participate in enrichment, recreational, and educational activities. The Jack and Denny Smith Library and Community Center is run jointly by LAUSD and FOMWS with the intent to make it more available for community use.

Mt. Washington Elementary School has been one of LAUSD’s ongoing success stories and FOMWS is committed to sustaining this level, of academic performance and support for our children through vigorous neighborhood, community and corporate fundraising efforts.

We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization whose mission is to establish and sustain consistent, supplemental fund-raising mechanisms and programs in support of educational, enrichment, and capital improvement programs for Mt. Washington Elementary School.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Mt. Washington Elementary School is nestled in the tranquil Mount Washington area, a hillside neighborhood located in Northeast Los Angeles, California. The community surrounding the school is comprised of a uniquely diverse group of residents that value being close to nature, yet live minutes away from downtown Los Angeles.

In addition to a strong academic curriculum, Mt. Washington Elementary School features a comprehensive arts program and encourages students to participate in various activities designed to foster an appreciation of visual arts, theater, music, dance, and song.

Parents in the Mt. Washington community provide significant volunteer and financial support. Their assistance allows the Mt. Washington Elementary School to offer a vast range of programs which includes Science Lab, Choir, Chess, and field trips. Our school is the hub of the community for many of our parents and children.  Families enthusiastically support the Parent Teacher Association (mwpta.org), Friends of Mt.
