Friends of Mt. Washington School President - Erica Rosales

Get to know our new president of Friends of Mt. Washington School (FOMWS).

Erica, mother of three children (two at Mt. Washington Elementary), a resident at Mt. Washington and an educator writes: "Community involvement makes all the difference in a school’s success." Read her story.

Erica Rosales, FOMWS new President, Mom to children at Mt. Washington Elementary School and a Mt. Washington resident.

Some of you got here purposefully like we did, others may have been pleasantly surprised that such a gem exists on top of our hill.  What I know for sure is that Mt. Washington Elementary reached this status because the people in our community have rallied to make it so.  Over 20 years ago the Friends of Mt. Washington School was created to ensure that the school be a community resource.  The Jack and Denny Smith Center (or MPR as our kids know it) was born.  We are the ONLY school in the district with such a joint use agreement.

Eleven years ago when the ARTS program was cut by the LAUSD a group of dedicated parents, and community members thought up the AUCTION as a fundraiser.  For over ten years, the AUCTION has been raising funds to sustain programs that LAUSD does NOT fund.  On May 6th, 2016 the Friends of Mt. Washington will be hosting the 11th Annual Auction.  I invite you to join us.  It will be a night of fun, fundraising for our school and a night to demonstrate what makes our school on the hill one of the top schools in the state.  Help us fund PE, Math and Art programs at our public school.  If we do not do it, no one else will.

We bought our home thirteen years ago.  Our daughters are now enjoying the benefits of a meaningful public education in second and fourth grade.  My three year old son looks forward to attending Mt. Washington Elementary in the next couple years.  Let’s make sure this school will benefit many children to come.

Thirteen years ago, when my husband and I decided to become homeowners my number one priority was finding a neighborhood with an excellent elementary school.  A native of Los Angeles, and product of public schools I knew that community involvement could make ALL the difference in a school’s success.  My husband worked in downtown and I was in the middle of creating a charter school for the Lennox community.  My number one priority as an educator was parental involvement.  One of my husband’s colleagues suggested we look into Mt. Washington.  I immediately researched the school.  Mt. Washington Elementary exceeded my expectations: it is a true neighborhood, public school.

Finally, our most exciting and biggest fundraiser is only a few months away.  Start thinking about the many ways you can support our school by participating in the much anticipated 11th Annual Auction on May 6, 2016.
